A Night to Remember: Celebrating 75 Years of the Women Army Corps Veterans Association at Marriott Killeen, TX

When I walked into the Marriott in Killeen, TX, for the Women Army Corps Veterans Association's 75th-anniversary event, I was ready for an evening of celebration, camaraderie, and storytelling. Little did I know that I'd be trading my role as a supportive attendee for an unexpected debut as an impromptu DJ and sound technician!

The Surprise Setlist

The evening started with a minor hiccup: the DJ was running late. My mom, ever the opportunistic event ambassador, promptly "voluntold" me for the task. "She has all the music on her phone!" she announced confidently to the room. The next thing I knew, I was connected to a Bluetooth speaker, scrolling through my playlists. Before long, the attendees—energetic and enthusiastic—were treating me as the official DJ, complete with song requests ranging from Motown classics to patriotic anthems.

My team at our event booth wondered where I'd vanished, while I juggled music requests and maintained the flow of the evening. Turns out, if you can play music on your phone, you're also qualified to be a DJ!

The Skit That Stole the Show

As the night unfolded, I was asked to assist with the sound for a special performance—a skit about the incredible story of the Six Triple Eight, the first all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during World War II. Their mission? Clearing a two-year backlog of undelivered mail to soldiers. This heartfelt reenactment was gripping and emotional, a testament to the resilience and determination of these trailblazing women.

Seeing their story brought to life on stage was a moment I'll never forget. It’s amazing to think that their story is now a movie, and I’m reminded of how touched I was by their legacy that night.

The Great Photo Rush

If the DJ gig and sound technician role weren’t enough, I also found myself in charge of solving the Great Photo Crisis of 2022. When we ran out of paper for the event photos, I quickly sent all the pictures to the nearest Walgreens for a one-hour pickup. It was a race against the clock, but like the Six Triple Eight delivering mail, I got those precious memories to the attendees just in time.

Shoulder Surgery and Smiles

Recovering from shoulder surgery, I wasn’t exactly expecting a high-energy night. But the joy, laughter, and gratitude from the women I had the privilege of serving made every effort worthwhile. Their strength and camaraderie were inspiring, and being a small part of their 75th-anniversary celebration is something I’ll always cherish.

Wrapping Up

The 75th-anniversary celebration of the Women Army Corps Veterans Association at the Marriott Killeen, TX, was unforgettable. From a playlist on my phone to an inspiring skit, the night was filled with unexpected challenges and rewarding moments. It reminded me of the importance of adaptability, community, and honoring history.

To all the amazing women who’ve served and continue to serve, thank you for your courage and commitment. And to my mom—thanks for keeping me on my toes!
